FAQ

Breanna made love such a powerful focus for the entire course. I don’t think one class went by where Breanna did not mention the love we all feel in grief and that the love does not have to end just because your person is not physically here. To me that is amazingly important to hear from someone else, it’s validating. It means so much emotionally, the fact that Breanna focused on love in the middle of the practice is so strong to me. It’s my favorite thing.”

What Is Grief Yoga?

Grief yoga is a therapeutic yoga practice that addresses the whole human who is grieving. This practice was made by a griever, for other grievers. This style of yoga was created using a kosha model. The koshas are the five layers of our experience: Physical, breath & subtle body, emotional, mental, and spiritual.

During the practice we will address some of the physical symptoms of grief including pain in the chest, generalized tension, difficulties sleeping, and more. Some of our movements, breathing techniques, and meditations will address the thoughts and emotions that can come with grief. Some people experience relief, guilt, anger, loneliness and more. Lastly, there will be opportunities for deep connection with yourself, the loved one you have lost, and any religious or spiritual practice you might have.

How Does It Differ From “Regular” Yoga?

Grief Yoga is a mind-and-body exploration of grief through the lens of yoga. The yogic techniques shared (movement, breathwork, and meditations) target the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual symptoms and experiences of grief. These are simple techniques you can use whenever your grief pops up throughout the day.

Breanna is trained in trauma-informed yoga therapy, which means that you are in control 100% of the time. Her teaching methods are intended to empower you to explore techniques and find what works for you.

Breanna offers grief-specific meditations. Some days that might be why you came to class, other days you might want to skip it. Each class Breanna will give an announcement before the meditation so that you can choose whether to participate.

You are unique and your relationships with those who have passed are unique, so your grief is unique.

What you need and how you find comfort will be unique. This class will NOT “fix” or “take away” your grief. It is there simply to offer techniques to help you find what can make this grief just that little bit more livable.

So for me the thing I loved the most, and surprised me were the visualizations. I had never done guided visualizations before. The way you did them, you worked them into every single class amidst the yoga itself. You worked in this time to visualize your loved one or remember a specific memory or something you loved about them. To me it was just incredible. That was a tool I had not used yet. Having that time on the mat to connect physically but also just quiet your mind and visualize your loved one based on a certain prompt, that was so powerful for me.

About Breanna’s Grief

Breanna was first introduced to yoga by her mom. The two of them tried out a very crowded hot yoga class and then did not go back again for a while. Years later, Breanna was an intrigued teenager who wanted to try yoga but did not want to go alone. She had a few friends go once or twice with her before one stepped up and went with her on a regular basis for two years. This same friend encouraged her to become a Yoga Teacher and follow this path. A few years into Breanna’s Yoga Teaching career her friend passed away. That was when she used yoga to help her cope with the loss. Today Breanna teaches grief yoga in honour of that friend.

Since that first loss, Breanna has had several other family losses.

FAQ

What if I can't do the yoga?

This yoga will be so simple that you can do it on a yoga mat, a couch, or even in bed! If you have any physical conditions and would like modifications offered to you, please send me an email yogatherapywithbreanna@gmail.com. Remember, this is your body and your time. If I offer something that doesn’t feel good for you, you can skip it or modify it! Everything I say is an option, I’m here to guide and offer suggestions, but the practice is up to you!

What if I am not ready to feel or it's all still too soon feeling?

Take each movement and each suggestion one at a time. Remember, you are in control. If you want to do something and explore a certain movement/breathwork/meditation, you can! If you don’t want to do something, no stress! Connection and community during this time are so important.

What if I cannot make it during that specific day and time?

Please feel free to still register to be able to access all of the content in addition to the recordings of the live classes.

Can other people see me?

All live classes are currently over zoom, it is up to you if you want to keep your camera on. Breanna will always “spotlight” her video so that it is the dominant view for everyone. With your camera on, she can give cues and feedback based on what she sees.
